Why I am a Young Earth Creationist

Am I nuts?

I don’t think I am.  Then why would I hold a position not only is not held in secular society, but is also not embraced by all Christians?

Why I am a Young Earth Creationist

There isn’t a short answer, other than to say that I believe what Biblical scripture plainly indicates – that God created the universe, and everything in it, in 6 days, around 6,000 years ago.

Why would I believe a collection of writings from over 2,000 years ago, that were compiled over hundreds of years, by at least 40 writers?

Because of the overwhelming evidence!  Don’t misunderstand me.  Ultimately a belief in God takes a certain amount of faith of course.  But so does an unbelief in God.  For in that instance you must have faith that the many unproven, and in many cases unprovable, scientific explanations of our world are true.

Not a Blind Faith

Christianity is not a blind faith, as many mistake it to be, because the evidence truly does support what the Bible plainly says.  Scripture has been around for thousands of years and has never been proven wrong.  There have been many attempts, and all have failed.  Historical and archaeological evidence has backed the Bible time and time again, even when experts dismissed some historical aspects of the Bible as simply untrue.  But the Bible wasn’t wrong, the experts were wrong.

A Great Discovery

Historians at one time dismissed that there really was a King David of the Bible because no other documentation, outside of scripture, could verify he existed.  You see, when it comes to Biblical issues, a lack of evidence is proof something didn’t exist in many historian’s eyes.  In 1993, a stone slab (the Tel Dan Stela) dated to be from the 9th century BC was found in northern Israel, with an inscription referencing the “House of David.”

This find, along with thousands of others over the decades, have continually confirmed that scripture is true.

In addition, hundreds of prophecies have been fulfilled that were predicted and recorded long before they occurred.  In fact, every prophecy that has targeted an event that has come to pass has happened just as prophesied.

The Bible also possesses a depth of wisdom that seems to be beyond mere human writing capabilities.

What About Science?

Is there a God?  Aside from the evidence from His word, there is undeniable evidence that we and all other life on earth are the result of an intelligent designer.  This is due not only to the vast complexity of life, even down to the most insignificant single-celled organism, but also due to the fact that every living thing contains the information needed to for that organism to exist in the first place.  And that information further enables that organism to survive and ultimately reproduce, thus passing that information on to the succeeding generation.

Why is this significant?  Because information can ONLY come from intelligence.  It doesn’t magically appear out of thin air, as secular science would have you believe.  Even Richard Dawkins, outspoken atheist author, admits that everything in nature appears designed.  He just refuses to admit that the designer could be God.

In regards to the origin of life, scientific observation has always confirmed that life only comes from life.  Thus, there is no way that life could have started on its own, as many scientists claim.  For more on this topic, refer to my blog post on the origin of life.

Christians Disagree

I believe most Christians would not disagree with me up to this point.  At least I hope not.  One of the areas that we Christians begin to diverge however, is in the early chapters of Genesis.  The primary issue is a matter of time.  Did God really create everything in six separate twenty four hour periods?  If so, how long ago was this creation week?

There are many theories as to how we Christians can try to make the creation week, as described in Genesis 1 match up with what mainstream science claims today.  Those claims are that the Earth formed billions of years ago, and life has slowly evolved, becoming more complex, over the supposed past hundreds of millions of years.

But when it comes to trying to coax God’s word in Genesis 1 into sliding into agreement with the secular science models, the competing Christian theories all fall flat on their face when other areas of scripture are taken into account.

Exodus 20:11 states, For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day.  Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.  This verse, given to Moses as part of the Ten Commandments, clearly confirms that the entire universe was created in six literal days, from start to finish.  Otherwise, it makes no sense to base the Hebrews work week and day of rest on the creation week.

How Long Ago?

How long ago was the creation week?  Based on the Genealogies found in Genesis chapters four and eleven, anyone can easily add up the time between Adam and Abraham to be about two thousand years.  Historical evidence places Abraham’s time to be about four thousand years ago.  Thus, the creation week should date to about six thousand years ago, according to scripture.

This clearly is in disagreement with the assigned age of the earth of at least four billion years ago, according to mainstream science.  And this is why so many Christians scramble to try to explain away Genesis 1 as myth, allegory, poetry, etc.  But as I will be discussing in future blog posts, there is ample evidence that the Earth is young, as well as ample problems with the dating methods that scientists employ derive ancient ages.

Perhaps the most remarkable evidence of a much younger earth, which in and of itself is continued proof that the Bible is to be believed literally, is that the layers of sediment we see laid down around the earth is overwhelming evidence of a global flood, which would have laid down multiple layers quickly, ruling out the long ages scientists have assigned to these layers.

These points are just the tip of the iceberg, really.  The reason I created this website and speaking ministry (and podcast to come soon) is to continually expose the problems with the mainstream science stories regarding these topics (because they sure aren’t telling anyone) and also share the exciting and reassuring evidence that supports what the Bible has said all along.

Occam’s razor is a philosophical principle that says if there are two possible explanations for an occurrence, the one in which you have to make the least amount of assumptions is the one most likely to be true.  I am not much into philosophy, but that sums up my position fairly succinctly.  Not only does real world evidence support a young Earth created by God, but the scientific claims are embarrassingly lacking in evidence and rely on far too many assumptions.  To be honest, I don’t have enough faith to believe in those claims.

Origins of Life: Problems With the Miller Experiment

Where did we come from?

That is one of the best and most important questions of all time. And the answer has a profound impact on you. If you were created by a God who has provided you expectations on how to live your life, and the possibility of an afterlife, one would think you would attempt to live your life in such a way as to obtain that eternal reward. But if you are a merely a cosmic accident, then truly life has no meaning or eternal reward.

The Truth About the Miller Experiment

We are typically taught in school, and reminded through various forms of media, that we are indeed the result of a string of accidents. We’re told that these accidents are proven fact, when in fact, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

That first accident, the beginning of life on earth, is often portrayed as having been proven possible by something known as the Miller experiment.  Images like this appear in many textbooks:

Stanley Miller conducted experiments in the 1952 to try to show that amino acids, the building blocks of life (not life itself) could have risen completely by chance, with no outside influence involved. He created a model of what he believed an early atmosphere would have been like, and ran it through a spark chamber (to imitate lightning strikes in that atmosphere) in order to see what chemical reactions may occur and what they might produce.

Because this experiment actually produced amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins, which in turn are the building blocks of living cells, this experiment is often touted as proof that life could have started on its own.

I was a big fan of famed radio personality Paul Harvey, with his news of the day. And as he used to say, “Now you’re going to hear the rest of the story.”

In 1995, Science magazine said that experts now dismiss the experiment because the early atmosphere looked vastly different than it did in Miller’s spark chamber.

Also, the amino acids he produced was a mixture of left-handed (by shape) and right-handed, which represents death.  You see, every living thing only has left-handed amino acids, until they die, when half of their amino acids become right-handed.

Lastly, the mixture he produced was 85% tar, 13% carboxylic acid (both toxic to life) and only 2% amino acids.

Summing Up the Problems With the Miller Experiment

To sum up:

  • The modeled atmosphere was incorrect
  • The amino acids represented death, not life
  • The mixture was toxic to life

And this was an experiment guided by intelligence, intended to model complete randomness!

But most importantly, LIFE was NOT created.

No cells, nor the building blocks of cells – proteins, were produced.  And yet, over 60 years and many follow up experiments later, the textbooks still try to convince us that life could have started on its own using this faulty experiment.

Stay tuned for more as we dig deeper into other reasons to put no stock in life starting on its own, and why we can have confidence that life was designed.

Truth

Truth is a funny thing.

There can only really be one truth in any given situation, just like there can only really be one Superbowl Champion each season, one United States President at a time, and so on.  And yet, we often are supplied with two or more versions of “truth” on many topics.

Sometimes those varying truths don’t really matter a whole lot, such as declaring who shot first – Han Solo or Greedo?  (Answer: it depends on which version of Star Wars Episode 4 you are watching.)

But other times, an understanding of what is truth and what isn’t can have a huge impact on you.

Does the truth about the origins of the universe matter?

For example, is the existence of the known universe and all life contained within it the result of the creative work of a higher being, or was it all a result of pure chance?

The answer to that question should have a profound impact on your thoughts, decisions and actions.  It is a question that has been answered definitively, “yes,” for both possibilities.  But clearly, both answers can not be true.

So how can one determine which answer is correct?  Logically, we should examine the claims and the evidence of both viewpoints, to see which one really holds up.

And that is why this website exists and why I have spoken at various locations around the country.

Ephesians 6 describes the parts that make up the Armor of God:

13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The very first piece mentioned, in verse 14, is the belt of truth.  I believe this is listed first because if we do not start with truth, we are starting from the wrong starting point.

Have you ever entered in an incorrect address into your phone or GPS and then made it to your correct destination?  No, of course not.  If you begin with the wrong starting point, you are not going to wind up at the correct location.

We should all care deeply about truth.  Especially truth that can have eternal consequences.

Sadly, it is all too common today, for young people especially, to switch their answer to this question of origins after a semester or two of Biology, Geology, Anthropology, etc.  And that’s because theories contrary to a divine origin are presented as fact, and students rarely are encouraged or allowed to think critically or examine the evidences given.  As you will see in this blog, the evidence does not hold up.

Thankfully, much hard work has been done by others to expose the many untruths being taught as fact in such circumstances, which I have felt convicted to share when and where I can, on this website, with the hope of preventing as many people as I can from walking blindly into a belief system that utterly destroys hope in a future and removes all meaning from life.

Does the truth about the origins of the universe matter?
